Il fuoco e la brezza del vento. Cinema e preghiera - San Paolo "Il fuoco e la brezza del vento. Cinema e preghiera" by Dario Cornati and Dario Edoardo Viganò (San Paolo 2015) aims to be a reflection and a view of the relationship between cinema and prayer, prayer which is an intimate, but not private, moment between God and Man. The relationship between cinematographic narration and forms, styles and dynamics of prayer, immediately reveals more difficulties than affinities.
In the first part of the book - "Nostalgia del silenzio" Dario Cornati explains that the search for silence is an essential condition so as not to lose oneself in the frenetic and schizophrenic environment of current society. Silence is the raw material of "creation": it is able to project us directly into a movie and, at the same time, to guide us towards an appreciation of the Christian message. Cornati underlines two different types of silence in the Gospel, by means of which it is possible to understand the astonishing message (the logos) of Jesus Christ, Rabbì of Nazaret.
The second part - "La preghiera tra campo e controcampo dello Spirito" by Dario Edoardo Viganò - outlines the connections between cinematographic narrations and dynamics and forms of prayer. Starting from the masterpieces of Andrej Tarkovskij and Ingmar Bergman, Viganò proposes a wide range of cinematographic representations of prayers in film history: Diary of a Country Priest, La strada, Accattone, The Mass Is Ended, Dekalog, Breaking the Waves, Into Great Silence, Lourdes, Of Gods and Men, The Cardboard Village, Philomena.
There is the hope that reading this book may lead to the need for going to the cinema and with a new outlook, and that one leaves the theatre with an open mind and that life may be restored by the Holy Spirit... Like that day on Tabor Mountain...
